"I want to make work that invites scrutiny; objects and images that are visually and materially compelling. Woodblock printing allows me a way of doing this. The process is a physically engaging one. It's very hands on. The block is cut and carved, inked, cleaned and inked again. It's a medium that is about manipulating materials and one that rewards time spent. It allows me to indulge my interest in the fundamentals of image making; to play with colour and form, texture and contrast in a very direct way. It's a very involving process, carving and shaping wood, mixing colour, rolling it out... the smell of oil and cut pine, the feel of the block in your hand. A record of process is always evident in the finished result. Instead of happening within a depicted scene the narrative exists within the object. The work tells the story of it's production, showcasing it's constituent parts in a way that is (hopefully) visually and conceptually engaging."
Each work is hand-printed within the edition and will have unique qualities and variations through the artist's process of printing
