Awaken
Katy Binks has created a collection of one-off, experimental silkscreen monotype exclusively for Art School. The individual prints are all unique but there’s an aesthetic thread linking them all together, whether that be shape or colour. According to Binks, the way she makes these works is very playful, placing things side by side to find a flow and rhythm from one image to the next.
Her new prints explore her ongoing fascination with the relationship between art and the urban environment. Her natural impulse is to imagine her work on a large-scale, interacting with the sort of Brutalist architecture that surrounds her studio in South London.
By painting her designs directly onto the open area of the silkscreen mesh, Katy is able to explore a looser, more intuitive approach to printmaking. This way of working has given her a new sense of freedom and has invigorated her practice to such an extent that it now has more in common with painting than with edition-led printmaking.
The artist wants the viewer to have the same playful approach that she had when making these works and has given them freedom to display the works in any way that they want.
Each work is hand-printed within the edition and will have unique qualities and variations through the artist's process of printing
